Start NOW: Planning Ahead For 2018

WOW! November 1st has arrived and we can hardly believe there are only two months left until we have to remember to write 2018 on our papers.

It felt really early, actually, to whip up a blog post about “preparing for the new year” and then, upon sitting down to write it, you realize it’s really not that far off after all. And again… you can never be too prepared, right?

With weeks already attributed to family time and holidays off work, we wanted to share a few of our top tips for getting prepared for the new year NOW, so when the clock strikes midnight in December, you’ll feel great knowing you’re two steps ahead for 2018.

1. Map out the easy things to plan for on your down time:
This is a really easy tip to follow, especially during the holidays when work might be a bit on the slower side. Think about it as a gift to your future self (it is the season of giving, after all)! If you have “big idea” plans or even a monthly calendar you know you’ll ALWAYS need, make those now and fill in what you can. At NRPR, for instance, we create and fill in everything we can for our social media and blog calendars for the next year. Do we know what exactly will go in every single slot? No, but we do have a general idea and having a thematic calendar built out makes it SUPER easy to fill in as ideas come to mind.

2. Clean up your lists!
Media lists, contact lists, homie lists… our list of lists could go on and on! For any professional (and especially those in PR) we know you have a ton of lists that keep you organized from day to day. However, when you’re working in a rush, it’s easy to let these lists get messy, unorganized, or just out of date. When you have the freed up brain space over the holidays, block off a few hours and clean up your lists. Add notes, take out irrelevant contacts, and make it look pretty. It may seem like a small task, but it’s something that will really come in handy in the new year.

3. Set goals for 2018:
This is a fun one! You’ll already be planning your personal New Year’s resolutions, so why not add on a few goals for your career or professional life? Are you working hard toward a promotion or raise? Or maybe you’re hoping to master a new skill? Whatever it may be, verbalizing your career goals — just as you do resolutions — will make them REAL and give you more motivation to hit the ground running in 2018.

Now it’s your turn! We want to know how YOU’RE preparing for a smooth and successful 2018. Are you getting your goals in line and cleaning house for a fresh start? Or maybe it’s something else we didn’t mention here.
