When it comes to human interaction, whether that be in your personal or professional life, personality is one of the first things someone will notice about you. It’s a unique factor; one that can make or break a new connection after your first interaction.
While it’s undoubtedly important to bring great PR skills to the table, such as strategic thinking and awesome communication chops, having a great personality is also vital to creating a successful career in the PR industry.
So what makes a great personality, exactly? Team NRPR has your back! Keep reading for some of our top tips and traits to keep in mind when it comes to your personality:
1. Be Genuine.
The most important thing is that your personality is genuine and true to who you are. We’ve all heard (and maybe used) the phrase, “fake it ‘till you make it,” but please, do NOT fake your personality. Let your true self shine through and be yourself, but always remember that how you interact with others will stick with them for a long time. If you come off fake or as if you’re trying to be something you’re not, that will be sniffed out in an instant, especially by a fellow communications pro.
2. Be Personable.
A career in PR means a lot of interaction with people. Whether that be your staff, clients, media, potential new customers, or even someone you met at a networking event, it’s important to try and relate to people on a level beyond just what you do in the office. This accomplishes a number of things. First, it helps keep relationships fresh. Second, it gives you the opportunity to connect with others on things that don’t pertain to work. Third, it shows that you actually care about them as a person and not just someone you need something from. Being personable is one of the reasons our team here at NRPR Group is so close. We’re all hard workers and know to get the job done, but we also focus on creating relationships outside of the office. When you’re personable and make a point to connect and get to know someone else, they will remember that (and like you for it)!
3. Be Understanding.
A really fantastic personality trait that all the best PR pros have is a great sense of empathy and the ability to understand others. In this field, it’s important to be flexible and roll with the punches. However, if you truly want to elevate yourself to the next level, make it a point to understand the different viewpoints brought to the table. Things won’t always be perfect, and when they’re not, the best PR pros are able to engage, listen to others, and work together for a common goal.
4. Be Confident.
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve worked hard, put in the hours, and are creating an awesome career path for yourself. You’re doing good work! Be proud of that and carry yourself with a sense of confidence. This personality trait is one of the first things someone will notice about you. Do you carry yourself with pride? Are you putting your best foot forward? Did you come prepared and ready for whatever will come your way? If you answered yes to all of those questions, you’ve got confidence!
Focusing on the traits above can carry you a long way in this industry, open doors, and allow you to experience new opportunities that you otherwise might have missed out on. When you’re a friendly, likable person who is genuinely interested in making meaningful connections, you will find that your network will grow (bonus: since good attracts good, it will be filled with similar, rockstar people just like yourself).
There are many more traits we could get into, but we want to hear from you! Do you have any stories about how your killer personality helped you rise to the top or secure a big win?
